For newly hatched chicks up to two weeks old, Aussie Chook Supplies recommends that you use marbles/polished stones in the green base to prevent accidental chick drownings, which unfortunately does happen. Small chicks only drink tiny bits of water and can do so easily between the gaps in the marbles.

As the chicks get older and stronger, remove the marbles/polished stones for a greater volume of water in the green base.
